About the Project
Coentral - História, Usos, Costumes e Tradições is a project of Crowdfunding (collaborative financing) that intends to edit a book about the old parish of Coentral, which belongs to the municipality of Castanheira de Pera.
Coentral is located on the southern slopes of the Serra da Lousã, where the long Ribera de Pera Valley is formed. Here is the birth place of three streams – Ribeira das Quelhas, Ribeira do Coentral Grande and Ribeira de Cavalete – here they get together to form Ribeira de Pera, an affluent of the Zêzere River.
Coentral was a parish of the municipality of Castanheira de Pera until 2013, year in which, having been extinguished in the scope of the national administrative reform, it was added to the parish of Castanheira de Pera, forming a new parish denominated União das Freguesias of Castanheira de Pera and Coentral. The localities of Coentral Grande, Coentral of the Cross, Coentral of the Barreiras, Coentral of Fojo, Camelo and Carriçal used to belong to the old parish.
About the Autor
Joaquim Ferreira was born in Coentral in 1954 and loves his homeland.
He graduated in Economics from the Instituto Superior de Economia de Lisboa. Being a former senior official of the public administration, after retiring he remained active in other aspects of his personal life and in the life of the Castanheirense community living in Lisbon which seeks to keep alive the connections to the land where he was born or where his ancestors were also born.
He has been a long-time scholar of the history, customs and traditions of Coentral and the municipality of Castanheira de Pera. Since 2013, he has published works on these subjects in the late newspaper "A Comarca", in the newspaper "O Ribeira de Pera" and on the pages of the social network "Facebook" that he manages. These works are developed, in greater depth, in the book that is intended to be published.
He is an associate of the CIRUC - Centro de Instrução e Recreio União Coentralense and the Casa do Concelho de Castanheira de Pera in Lisbon, he also belongs to the Board of the folk group Rancho Folclórico Neveiros do Coentral and he is also an active member of the musical group Fragas e Giestas - Cavaquinhos do Coentral.
